There’s one thing that everyone wants. It’s the thing we all fight and strive for. It’s the reason we do what we do. It’s happiness, and happiness can be a tricky thing to achieve. We were all told that happiness is an overwhelming euphoria and it comes from the food we eat and the fun we have. But it turns out that happiness is a lot like success and to truly have it, there are certain steps to happiness we must take.
What are the 6 Steps to Happiness?
This one comes as no surprise to anyone, but optimism is key in becoming happy. But there’s more to optimism than going through the motions and saying something positive. It’s about having gratitude for everything in your life. With positive energy and appreciation come positive events and new opportunities.
Be kind and outgoing
Nurturing those social relationships is a great step towards happiness because, as mentioned before, those around you will start feeding into your positivity. If you are kind to someone, they will be kind back. People are socially symbiotic and empathetic, so happiness becomes with a team effort that starts with you.
Cope and forgive
Life is often times immensely hard, but no one has it easy–yet many people are happy. What do they do? They practice good coping methods and forgive everyone and everything that made happiness a little harder to achieve. But forgiveness isn’t just about coping with what others have done to you, it’s about forgiving yourself.
Savor the little moments
You may have heard people talk about those “small moments” in life that make it all worth it. It’s important to be present in every situation, even in the hard times, but especially in those perfect little moments. Savoring life’s greatest events will extend the happiness you achieve from those moments. Not only that, but try to seek them out. Be adventurous and seek out the scenic route so you can savor the beauty the world has to offer.
Set achievable goals
Happiness is like success: it comes with commitment and work. Every facet of life has plenty of room for goals. You may not be a career oriented person, but you can set personal or family goals. Maybe you want to achieve an ideal weight. Even if that goal takes longer than you anticipated, actively working on something is the ONLY way you can be completely happy. Being lethargic and apathetic isn’t happiness. The fulfillment of doing something that took time and energy is.
Perhaps one of the most important steps to happiness is to stay healthy. People are happiest when they feel good and feeling good only comes with being healthy. That means eating right and exercising. It also means mental health. Not only should you eat right and work out, but you should also seek out those special social relationships and professional connections that help you grow. Living healthy also means living in a healthy home and using chemical-free products in your home and body.
Follow all the steps on this list, wash, rinse, and repeat–and before you know it, you’ll find true happiness.
