Every year we do it. And every year we fail, right? So how do you write a New Year’s Resolution that you can accomplish? How do you write one that doesn’t totally suck? Here’s how.
How to Write a New Year’s Resolution That Works
Tip 1 – Don’t change your life
If you want to change your life or lifestyle to something better, that’s great. But it’s not going to work by trying to change everything at once. Creating a New Year’s Resolution list of things to do all at once will overwhelm you, and likely nothing will get done. Work on changing one habit at a time to start accomplishing big goals.
Tip 2 – Write it down
Write it down, then take what you’ve written and pin it to a wall you look at every day. Make multiple copies of your New Year’s Resolution and pin them to multiple walls. Read it aloud. Writing it down and reading it every day will keep it clear in your mind, and your universe.
Tip 3 – Create a vision board
Make your goals visual by creating a vision board. If you haven’t already, check out my latest blog with vision board tips for 2018.
Tip 4 – Have a plan
It is not enough to simply write down your goals and visualize them. You must also be working towards those goals in some way; you need to make a change. Make a plan. Set a new routine. Do whatever it takes to make that change and stick to it to accomplish your goals.
Tip 5 – Reward yourself
You know that psychology trick known as positive reinforcement? Help yourself win by rewarding yourself for your hard work making a change. Start with daily if necessary, then weekly, then monthly, and before you know it, you will have accomplished a goal.
Creating a New Year’s Resolution is a positive way to reflect on what you’ve done this year and how you would like to grow next year. They can be an excellent tool for gaging goals and how to accomplish those goals. However, they require effort and change actually to be effective. Make the New Year’s Resolution this year, but also make the change necessary to start achieving those resolutions too.
