There is a famous adage that it takes 10,000 to become an expert at most things. It has been applied to everything from playing the guitar to public speaking. The concept is encouraging because it says we can master skills if we put in the time and effort. But it can be discouraging as well – 10,000 hours is such a large number that some people don’t start.
The same is true with your AdvancingWithUs goals. We think of the end goal we want to achieve. Whether your goal is financial freedom or to achieve a level within the organization, those are powerful goals. But to achieve the end goal, we need to start with the work that we do every:
Set Weekly and Monthly Goals
Sure, you want to earn that next level… But what are you going to do toward that goal this week? Where do you want to be by the end of this month? We need to break down our major goals into weekly and monthly targets. We can\’t climb the mountain in a day but what are our achievable, short term targets?
Track Your Progress and Review It Regularly
Another old but true saying is ‘that which is measured is managed’. Keep track of your activities. Look at your numbers every day. Review how the previous day went and make sure that your plans for the upcoming days include activities that will help you move forward.
Each week, plan for the next. Make sure your schedule and activities are aligned with your weekly goals. These habits will help you stay on track.
Find a Goals Partner
Find someone who is in your corner. It can be a teammate or someone in your life who supports you. Regularly review your numbers with your goals partner. Talking through it will spark ideas of different ways you can get to the next level. Do this once a week if you can. Sharing your goals and progress are a powerful way to stay on track!
Sometimes, life interferes with our goals. That’s ok. The important thing is not to get too down when you get off track. All you can do is pick up and do the next thing you can right. The best example for this is diet and exercise. If you gain a few pounds or miss a few workouts, don’t lose hope. Just get back to it and start again. Successful people will control what they can and get back to work.
Success is habits. If you cultivate great habits, you will find that success follows. Do you have your goals set? If not, reach out and we will help!
