The people we spend the most time with have an enormous influence on our life. Success begins with your habits and environment. To achieve our goals, we need to make sure we are surrounded by people who will help us and not hold us back.
Who are the people in your life that you spend the most time with? Do they build you up or do they take your time and energy without giving in return?
People to avoid:
Doubters
These are people who don’t really believe that success can be achieved. They seem to root against it and every setback becomes more proof that our goals are unattainable. They almost wait for something to go wrong. These people see the cloud in every silver lining and are people we can’t keep close if we are going to reach our goals.
Critics and Jealous People
Monday morning quarterbacks can really sap motivation. We all need to learn from mistakes to grow. But having someone dwell on failures and second guess us can be a motivation killer. Nobody likes hearing I told you so.
Jealous people are similar. They just want to tag along on our journey but they are not really contributing. Think of rowing a boat – it requires everyone pulling in the same direction. If everyone doesn’t pull together a boat goes off course or even in circles. Jealous people tend to think of themselves rather than rowing with the team.
Loafers
What happens when we are having trouble doing the next, right thing? We all know someone in our lives who will say, “Forget that, let’s go have fun”. This person is not helping!!
The road to success requires our energy and passion. So people who are lazy or always find a reason not to take positive steps are not people we can afford to have close to us.
What do we want in our 5 people? Here are a few qualities:
Hold Us Accountable
In difficult moments, we need people around us who understand our goals and who remind us of what we want to accomplish. This is the person who will tell us that the work won’t take long and it will feel great after we have done it.
Mentally Tough People
When we have a moment of weakness, is there someone who will help you keep your resolve? Does this describe anyone you know?
We all have setbacks. What separates successful people from others is their ability to bounce back when there is a setback. Our best allies are those who don’t let setbacks get to them. These are people who roll up their sleeves and work harder when things get tough. These are qualities we need to grow and nurture in our selves.
